[He lets himself inside, and immediately puts down the things he'd been carrying so he can look around the apartment for Kanda.]
I had to buy some things to show you one of the things I enjoy usually.
[Enji pulls open something from a box that looks like a large white slab of crystal. He sets it in the center of the table while he tries to figure out how to start the thing when it has no buttons. He holds up the box squinting at it, and then figures it out eventually, turning it on so the surface of the crystal begins to heat up slowly. The lower side remains cool against the tabletop. It's some strange high tech alien grill. He used a lot of demichroma to buy it, but it would be worth it to share the simple joy of grilling meat (he also bought a LOT) with his roommate.]
(Kanda was lingering in the hallway, between the bathroom and his room. His phone vibrates and he brings it out of his pocket to see the message. He stuffs it back into his pocket and returns to his room to grab a scarf. He had glanced out the window and saw an overcast with some wind breathing through the streets, stirring some leaves and brushing over people as they meandered through the streets below.
By the time Kanda reaches the living room he hears the door and pauses as he watches Todoroki walking in. The scarf is in his hands and he pulls on the fabric with a newfound insecurity. Was he not meant to meet him outside?
Kanda's lips part and he lowers the scarf to his side as he moves closer to the man and watches as the elder man pulls something out from a package. He's quiet, for a moment, before he starts to feel heat resonating from the smooth face of the crystal.)
[He doesn't say much as he unpacks the thing and sets it up. Truthfully, he's not sure it will be the same as the grills they use at home, but it was the best he could find that would be safe for indoor use--at least that's what he was told.]
I was told it was what the people here use to grill meat. Or vegetables. Anything you like.
[Enji hopes his idea to show Kanda hadn't been a stupid one. While the thing heats up he disappears into the kitchen to return with two bowls of rice (bless the rice cooker), two plates, and a couple different dipping sauces. It wouldn't be exactly the same as what he has where he's from, but it's the closest he can get.]
You put the meat on here to cook for as long as you want. When it's the way you like it, you eat it. [He looks up to Kanda briefly.] Have you done anything like this before?
(Kanda sets the scarf aside and folds his arms as he watches the crystal. The answer seems obvious now that he knows what's for - usually works that way, doesn't it? His lips twist and he gives a small nod. Although he's used to the accommodation of a cafeteria and a chef that can literally cook anything you ask for and somehow has all the ingredients and can prepare the meal in unrealistic time, there were times when Kanda was out in the world having to prepare his own food. He would do so much like this, over a campfire however.)
I traveled a lot, back home, I would camp often and prepare my own food. This is a lot nicer, of course, a lot more convenient.
(He didn't have to catch his food, the meat was cut up, there was a rice cooker at home.. and he was in a comfortable environment with a comfortable bed to look forward to at night rather than the ground.)
[He starts with one kind of meat first, not really sure what each thing is but he's fairly certain they are some variation of pork, chicken, and beef--he hopes. Enji listens to the sizzling when the first bit of raw meet hits the surface of the crystal. It's very different but similar enough that it feels comfortable.]
I don't think I've ever been camping. Not for fun. [With a quick glance at Kanda he examines him and then goes back to the meat, flipping it when it's time.]
You don't look like the camping type. [Which is his way of saying Kanda looks too pretty to ever have to camp out of necessity, but he also supposes the world he came from was very different.]
(Kanda doesn't know what Todoroki means by looking the part. He imagines something akin to looking like a finder, someone clad in a simple thick robe and packing around a large backpack that held a communicator that could reach back to headquarters. Finders were often exorcist's companions. Kanda had a few in his day that he didn't feel were all together useless; though even less that weren't in his way.
Smoke begins to rise from the meat and the smell is pleasant, that's for sure. He looks to the other, clarifying his experience with camping:)
It wasn't for fun.
(His eyes return to the heating source on the table.)
I went around the world, eradicating demons.. we call akuma. Fighting a force that wants to wipe humans off the face of the earth. I would stay with whoever would house me for the night, I would camp, I would pay for a room if I had the coin.. my whole life I spent hunting.
[Cor doesn't think about it much, either. In truth, his mind's a little distracted by recent events at the time of this thread, so he's not quite paying as close attention to the name of the replier as he should.]
One hour, then. In front of the Convenience store over on Cherryhill Lane works for you?
(He figures this may be someone who had gotten his contact information from a past client of Kanda's. After all, people here were like people from his home as well: they liked convenience and nothing was more convenient than having your belongings delivered to you. Kanda makes sure he's there on time, even a few minutes early, and he's on the look out for someone who approaches the destination.)
[Cor, of course, still hasn't realized that he's contacted the wrong person. He's expecting someone more familiar, someone that he would like to have a chat with. So when he shows up at the spot on time, just a couple of minutes after Kanda shows up, he's not thinking that this is the person he's been chatting with via text. Instead, he sits down on a nearby bench, glancing around for the person he is expecting to show up.]
[The trip from Iris had been confusing yet familiar. He felt as though he'd been going through all of that for a second time, but since waking up he hadn't been able to fully remember what happened the first time. Certain things came to him occasionally, but it wasn't consistent.
Once they landed the first thing that came to his mind was home and his legs carried him the rest of the way. The apartment building looked strange, it wasn't his house. His family wouldn't be inside, but he continues inside and ultimately stands outside of the door to his apartment. Is this mine?
First he lifts a hand to knock, and then it unlocks on its own in response to him somehow. That was unusual, but he shuts it behind him and looks around inside. Looking down, there are shoes at the entrance that don't belong to him, and now he's concerned he'd just stepped into someone else's home. He's still drawn to a room in particular so he starts moving in that direction. Is this mine? Is any of this mine?]
(The third day was hopeful, after Kanda had made the anonymous post there had been a few people that had come out to say they would look for Enji. Surely, the third day, someone would recognize the brute with crimson hair wandering around Lunatia and bring him back home. If Enji was still here, surely it was a momentarily stupor which could be healed with chroma - and Kanda was eager, ever so, to deliver that chroma to the hero. Yet, as the day turned into night and not a single sighting was reported he found himself losing hope once again. If Enji had been abducted Kanda would have known about it. They shared the same bed, he would have felt Enji slip from it let alone be dragged out of it. Besides, the man would have certainly put up a fight.
The fourth day brought Kanda back into a heavy despair which lingered through the morning, afternoon, and evening. Kanda had remained home the last two days which was both difficult to do and far too easy. Yesterday he felt staying home would be best in case Enji returned with the help of a friend who knew where he belonged. Today he felt like staying home and disregarding Lunatia entirely. Although, there was a growing anxiety within him that made him want to pack his belongings and take to the street again. I don't want this fucking apartment.. I don't want to stay here.. I don't want.. His previous declarations were hastily made, even if mentally, but the reality of the situation was this apartment had become his home.
Even without Enji here, it was the only place he looked forward to returning to, and now that Enji was gone he found himself clinging to the familiarity of the place and tracing through the halls following the lingering scent Enji left to spite Kanda.. to haunt him.
The fourth day was mostly spent lounging between the couch and Enji's bed. Currently Kanda was sleeping off and on in Enji's bed, he had taken to the center of it and managed a pillow between his arms. He roused at the sound of the door, he even held his breath as he waited for voices or noise. Though whoever entered the apartment was relatively quiet and he wasn't convinced someone had entered the apartment until the presence was at the door of the room. Kanda pushed himself up to see the intruder. His heart skips a beat and his breath catches in his throat with a noise of surprise finally launching an exhale. Enji.. casually standing there without any warning, without any notice.. why wouldn't Enji have texted first? Why wouldn't he have reached out to Kanda? Why.. would he just return home like this to catch Kanda here.. pitiful, thin, naked, and confused?)
Enji..
(His eyes scrutinized Enji, satisfying his disbelief for what his eyes were seeing.)
[He stands there in the doorway, not taking another step forward because he sees someone on his bed.Is it my bed? His body feels like it wants to be at home and comfortable here, regardless of the other presence in the room, but his brain can't process the desire to join the stranger in it. He's married.
He's wearing casual clothes from his home rather than his hero uniform. He'd just finished finalizing plans to separate from his family so that he would not have to be around his wife when she returned home from the hospital. He's married, but separated. Something he'd just experienced before he was here last. When was he here last?]
You know me? Have I been here before? Why is this place so familiar?
[A few steps later and he's next to the bed, looking down at the slender man with beautiful black hair. He wants to touch it, but he doesn't. It wouldn't be appropriate to touch a stranger. No, not a stranger...His roommate? Is he mine?]
(There was an immediate sense that something was off, that something was wrong, but he couldn't place what it was - it wasn't even really in the forefront of his mind. The only thing he could concentrate on, the only thing he could see was Enji's return. Then it came down on him like a tidal wave crashing onto him and restricting his breath. A weight of disappointment, of despair overwhelmed him and he froze in the horror of it all.
His lips part and the color drains from his skin. His eyes stare at the other, wide and confused, before the sting of air burns them and they water.
No.. he's crying.
His heart skips a beat and his hand reaches up to touch the tattoo over his chest. Can't heal.. can't mend... can't do shit for a broken soul. For a metaphoric broken heart. Enji left and returned a husk. A hallow man in which nothing of Kanda remained. His hand lifts from his chest to wipe at the hot tears that stream down his face and he pulls himself together enough to stand from the bed. He holds his breath and he moves toward Enji. He stops a foot before the other and a fresh set of tears slip past his lashes before he moves for the doorway.)
[Watching Kanda cry did something to him. The pain in his chest only grows as he sees him like that. Enji wants answers, he wants to know who the young man is, why he's here, and how he can make everything better for him. He doesn't know why it matters so much, but it's his priority.
As Kanda gets closer, he reaches for him, but at the last moment his roommate turns to head past the door, tears still in his eyes.]
Wait, please wait! [He doesn't want to use force but he can't just let him walk away. Enji feels like all of this is familiar. He doesn't think as he reaches out to grab him by the shoulders, pulling him into a hug that he wouldn't be able to escape from even if he tried.]
Don't leave me. [Things start to come back to him slowly. This wasn't the first time he's held him in his arms. Or the first time he's had silky long hair spilling over his fingers. He knows him. Intimately.]
[ Shino had aimed for the new year rather than king stag whatever's holiday, feeling it at least means something where the rest simply doesn't resonate with him at all. which is why he ends up using the courier service for the first day of the new year: he's found his own ways to pray at temples with unhearing gods, then sends a prayer to the two he knows are listening, but this has nothing to do with any of them.
gratitude is something you pay forward, right? or at least it feels like you should. kanda gets a note attached to an unremarkable box; inside is a smaller, wooden box with an interesting grain to the wood, polished and certainly not new. inside that is a pendant: a lightning bolt attached to a chain, made of a metal that catches the light. the lightning bolt is not as sharp at the edges as it seems it should be. ]
Happy New Years wishes, Kanda! Good health and happiness and no extra weird moonblessing cycles to you.
